Whether you want to respond to emergencies, investigate crime, work in the community, or use technical skills behind the scenes, there is a pathway into policing that fits your background.
Career Paths in UK Policing
Police Constable
The foundation of UK policing. Respond to emergencies, protect the public, investigate crime, and serve your community. Available via degree apprenticeship (PCDA), degree holder entry (DHEP), or pre-join degree.
Detective
Investigate serious and complex crime — murder, sexual offences, fraud, child protection, and cyber crime. Transfer from uniform after 2+ years' service, or apply directly via the Detective Constable Direct Entry route.
PCSO
A civilian, community-focused role with designated (not full) police powers. Foot patrol, anti-social behaviour reduction, and community intelligence gathering. No degree required. The approachable face of neighbourhood policing.
Special Constable
A fully warranted volunteer police officer with the same powers as a regular PC. Serve alongside regular officers in your spare time — excellent preparation for a full-time police career or a rewarding community contribution in its own right.
Firearms Officer
Armed response officers deployed to the most dangerous and complex incidents. Selection is highly competitive and open only to experienced, vetted officers. Requires a minimum of 2 years' service and passing specialist assessment.
Police Staff
Civilian employees in roles that support the operational force — control room operator, intelligence analyst, crime scene investigator, safeguarding coordinator, HR, finance, and IT. Essential to modern policing.
Dog Handler
Work with trained police dogs in general purpose patrol, tracking, and detection roles. A specialist deployment open to experienced officers. Handlers care for their dog at home and build a close working partnership over the dog's career.
Roads Policing
Patrol motorways and major roads, investigate fatal collisions, pursue stolen vehicles, and enforce road traffic legislation. Requires advanced police driving qualifications and is open to experienced officers.
Promotion Pathway
Police officers progress through the ranks by passing the Police Promotion Exams (PPE) and meeting the required competency framework (CVF) standards. Timelines below are approximate and vary considerably by force and individual.
First supervisory rank. Lead and manage a team of constables on response or specialist teams.
Duty officer for a shift or area. Command resources at incidents and manage team performance.
Command a unit, department, or large geographical area. Senior management responsibilities.
Strategic command of divisions or specialist departments. Public order, BCU or force leadership.
